I wasnʻt happy with how my podcast recording went so I decided to see if I had the energy (Iʻm sick, possibly with Omicron right now) to type it up instead. I felt like I skimmed over the transit because after I published the episode, I knew I didnʻt say so many things that I wanted to.
On January 14, 2022 at 4:41 AM Mauna Time, Mercury will station retrograde at 16° of Capricorn until February 3, 2022 at 9:12 PM Pacific Time, when Mercury will station direct at 0° of Capricorn.
WHAT’S A RETROGRADE (℞)?
When planets are in retrograde it doesn’t mean they’re actually going backwards. What it means is that from the perspective of Earth, the planet looks like it’s traveling in the opposite direction of what we’re use to seeing. The reason is because Earth is traveling past the planet in comparison to it’s orbit. An analogy I’ve used in the past to help people to understand this would be to imagine you’re driving on a two lane street. One lane is going in one direction and the other is going in the opposite direction. Now let’s say you want to pass the car in front of you. You’ll probably cut over into the other lane when there isn’t any on-coming cars, and pass the vehicle by going quicker than their speed. For a split second, you’re actually going the same exact speed as their car and this is when Mercury is “station direct.” Mercury appears to stop moving in the sky, or slow down, just as the car next to you. When you overtake the car by going faster, it looks as if they’re going backwards from your perspective in the car, and this is when Mercury is in retrograde. The other car isn’t actually going in reverse, it just appears that way.
Sidebar: The gif is really about the dog driving, but more so about how it looks when you pass a car.
This Mercury will station retrograde in an Earth Sign and remain there until it stations direct. This employs conversations and thoughts based on practical matters.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?
Mercury is currently “slowing down” (from our perspective on Earth) and will station retrograde.
The 0° of any sign is critical, this comes after the 29° where planets finish their lessons and now we get to breathe in some fresh air. It reminds me of The Fool in Tarot. Purity and ready to explore new things and experience new energies. For this Mercury Retrograde, it just went backwards through Capricorn and stopped at the start of the sign, so weʻll get a second chance to do something again and do it better this time. You should be feeling enthusiastic and willing to give this another go. You know what to expect now and can navigate this terrain with the knowledge you have gained from December 29th until now. I really see this as people getting a real start to 2022.
Capricorn: structure, tradition, ambition
Mercury: language, correspondence, learning, awareness
Mercury will conjoin Ka Lā during the transit which tells me that things on our mind deal with how we show up in the world or how others view us. Itʻs ok to be selfish right now, the reason I say that is because Iʻve noticed that when people have this aspect in their natal chart, they tend to be very self centered.
Mercury getting too close to the Sun reminds me of the story of Icarus, the son of a gifted craftsman, Daedalus, who made the Labyrinth for King Minos of Crete. It was made to imprison the Minotaur, his cheating wifeʻs child from an affair she had with the Cretan Bull. When the King found out that the craftsman helped his daughterʻs new found crush, and his enemy, who volunteered to defeat the Minotaur, by giving him tools to beat it, he imprisoned the craftsman and his son, Icarus. While imprisoned, Daedalus designed wings made from wax and feathers in order for them to escape. As Icarus began flying, he forgot the guidance his father had given him, “donʻt fly too close to the Sun, follow my path.” He let his excitement get the best of him and got to close to the Sun, the wax melted and he fell to his death.
Take things a little bit more serious right now, have a plan and follow it. Make sure you take the middle path, not too difficult and not too easy aka not too high, which will melt the wax on your wings and not too low that your feathers get wet. However you want to view it. Maybe even following the path of someone else who has reached what you want to achieve.
Some classic Mercury Retrograde (M℞) associations are agitation, confusion and setbacks when it comes to all things ruled by Mercury. This is a time that’s best for being acquiescent to things not going how you expect them to. Most astrologers will tell you not to start anything you want to continue doing after Mercury goes direct, but I think that isn’t true. I’ve started things during a M℞ that I still do to this day, I even moved during a M℞—drove 9 hours without my 12 foot moving truck breaking down or traffic, and everything went smoothly—and I was still living in the same house 2 years later. My other half started a new job during a M℞ and became a foreman running his own crew and continues to make promotions and get raises. It’s all about mindset.
Pro tip: There’s a lot of doom and gloom surrounding the Mercury Retrograde that people actually manifest fucked up situations for themselves because they go into this transit with that type of a thought pattern. Mercury Retrogrades are the most productive times of the year for me, and the way I’ve made this work in my favor is by learning how to move in tandem with this energy. Be flexible, because sometimes it’ll throw you curve balls, and instead of getting pissed off, realize that it’s not happening TO you, but FOR you. You will not believe how much you can actually get accomplished and I bet it’ll go better than you thought.
HOW THIS COULD AFFECT YOU
Don’t be surprised if there are communication hiccups between you and others. Make time to re-assess goals you set for 2022, re-prioritize things so that life runs smoother, recommit to something and try again, donʻt get caught up in working too much, re-design the Saturn Matrix, rest, yes, bitch. I said REST! I get it, it doesnʻt feel right because the year just started if you follow the Gregorian Calendar (which IMO is a newer calendar as it wasnʻt introduced until 1582 to replace the Julian calendar) but itʻs been said that the Lunar Calendar is 10x more accurate than the Gregorian, so is it really the New Year or does it feel more like youʻre at the tail end of a cycle thatʻs wrapping up? If so, your New Year could actually begin when the Chinese celebrate it, on February 1st this year, or when we have the Spring Equinox, on March 20th, this marks the start of the New Astrological Year. Just use your discernment and see what feels like a New Year to you.
One thing I want to point out is a pattern I’ve noticed with people who have their natal Mercury linked with their natal Venus or if the transiting Mercury Retrograde is activating their 5th, 7th, 8th or 11th house, ex-friends, ex-lovers, ex-business partners, ex-whatevers come back into the picture during the M℞. So stay makaʻala because Venus is also retrograde as well and this deals with kānakations, attraction, pleasure, and wāhine.
In order to get an accurate interpretation of how this will influence you based on your natal chart, you must know your Sidereal Natal Chart
